Financial performance is key to growth

Accounting for nearly ten percent of the US economy, the logistics sector is key in the operation of nearly all business environments. With rapid growth projected until at least 2033, we may see a one and a half trillion dollar industry multiply threefold. The efficiency and financial performance of the industry at large has a direct impact on US economic growth. Increasing diversification and supply chain integration are posing new challenges to operations within this sector. It is expected, however, that these challenges will guarantee unique solutions to warehousing and distribution to fuel this new stage of growth and meet the rising demand.

The Modern Supply Chain

Warehouse management is integral to supply chain success. Flexibility underpins high volume operations.

Warehousing Cost

On average, a quarter of all expenditures will fall into this category. Aside from the lease and payroll budgets, operations incur many expenses to guarantee product integrity and timeliness. Technological and operational infrastructure can contribute significant cost as well.

Transportation Cost

For the majority of logistics operations, transportation contributes most to overhead. It requires precise strategies in order to manage the volatility that comes being tied to the fuel and labor markets. In the global economy, variability is further exacerbated by the uncertainty in international relations. Even so, much has to be managed across equipment expenses, various regulatory frameworks, accurate documentation, insurances, etc. Coordination becomes a major lynch-pin in multimodal systems, often requiring unforeseen redundancies and labor increases to maintain operations.

Impact of the project on the
city and community

The second phase of the southern sector conversion would see two of the four tracks between Sydenham and Hurstville, part of the Sydney Trains Illawarra line, converted to rapid transit and added to the Sydney Metro network. This would increase rail capacity between Hurstville and the city by 10 trains per hour. Though a precise construction timeframe was not provided, the plan envisages all work being completed by 2031. The Hurstville conversion would add eight stations and 9 km (5.6 mi) to the metro network. Developing plans for this extension has proven difficult, and the Sydney Morning Herald reported in February 2016 that the project may have been dropped.

“We are focused on the longer term rail options. It's got to work as a single network, the whole network, but we are looking at private sector involvement in those as well. And we've got an open mind”
